Duas ameaças à vida na Terra, tal como a conhecemos, guerra nuclear e apocalipse climático.
"Just the fact that a
nuclear war is even considered thinkable is really an astonishing
commentary on human imbecility, again, the first strike, the attacker
would be destroyed, there's no question about that. To be planning
for something like this, you can't find words to describe it.

What's been found over
the years, and what's indeed shown in careful studies is that the
most important mode of organization is face to face contact, that
actually shows even in political campaings. There was an interesting
study recently by Andrew Coburn, a very good military analyst,
journalist, for the atlantic i think, in which he revealed a series
of studies analysing how political spending influences elections,
turns out that the impact is pretty slight, people don't pay much
attention to TV ads, but what has an enourmous effect is canvassing,
going door to door and talking to people, that turns out to have a
huge impact. Incidently, that doesn't mean that the political
spending is wasted by the people who spend it, because remember they
are not just trying to get their candidate in, they're buying
something very precious called access, if you fund a political
candidate, that candidate's door are open to your lobbyists and
corporate lawyers, who can go in and write the legislation that's the
candidate ultimately will sign, that's the way the legislative
process works
it also does have an
impact on the electoral process, but what really has a major impact
is talking to people, that means local organization expanding to
national and international organization
we know that from
history, just take a look at the major achievements of say even the
past generation, civil rights movement, womens rights, opposition to
nuclear weapons, environmental concerns, it all developed this way,
and that goes way back to abolitionism, overthrowing the feudal
system, as far back as you go, it's really a job for everyone,
wherever you happen to be, whatever opportunities."
